SPN 2100 Spanish for Healthcare Professions I

This course is an intermediate-level course designed for students seeking to enhance their Spanish language skills and cultural competency within the context of healthcare. The course combines language instruction, cultural discussions, and healthcare-specific material to prepare students for effective communication with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. Students will discuss topics including diet, the digestive system, healthcare and Spanish speakers in the United States, and mental health, building their previous Spanish skills and their ability to conduct basic medical interviews and physical examinations in Spanish. The class will also involve volunteering to help Spanish-speaking patients at Alamance County's Open-Door Clinic (activities such as taking calls, making appointments, and interpreting during health visits) during the last month of class. Taught in Spanish.

1. Students will demonstrate Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High proficiency in interpersonal spoken Spanish by engaging in culturally appropriate conversations with Spanish-speaking patients and community members.
2. Students will develop cultural competency and interpretive skills by interpreting and discussing healthcare-related texts, conversations, and situations relevant to Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.
3. Students will apply their Spanish language skills in real-world healthcare contexts by assisting Spanish-speaking patients through their community engagement.
