MGT 429 HRM: EMPLOYMENT LAW

This course examines the major legal frameworks governing the modern employment relationship, while enhancing students' abilities to recognize the legal implications of workplace situations and to reach informed, defensible decisions as human resource managers. Topics covered include: equal opportunity with respect to race, sex, national origin, religion, age, and disability; occupational safety and health; workers' compensation; wage and hour regulation, including family and medical leave; the employment-at-will doctrine and wrongful discharge; and the classification of workers as employees or independent contractors. Using a case-based, problem-solving approach, students will not only gain an understanding of the legal rules associated with the various stages of the employment process, but will also consider ethical issues related to promoting employee effectiveness. Prerequisites or co-requisites: BUS 221 and MGT323.
