Interpersonal Violence (Including Sexual Violence)

Elon University recognizes the serious and negative impact that acts of interpersonal violence, including sexual violence, have on individuals and the University community. Members of the university community, guests and visitors have the right to be free from all forms of gender and sex-based discrimination and violence, examples of which can include acts of sexual violence, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. All members of the campus community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of others. When an allegation of misconduct is brought to an appropriate administration’s attention, and a respondent is found to have violated this policy, serious sanctions will be used to reasonably ensure that such actions are never repeated. This policy has been developed to reaffirm these principles and to provide recourse for those individuals who have been the target or victim of interpersonal violence. This policy is intended to define community expectations and to establish a mechanism for determining when those expectations have been violated. This policy is outlined in more detail and the specific Hone Code charges associated with them in the Elon Honor System section of this Student Handbook.

As the University addresses interpersonal violence, the following are key elements to an environmental approach to addressing culture and specific acts of violence.

• Support and resources for targets or victims of interpersonal violence, including sexual violence
• Policies and procedures that reflect the values of the University and our intolerance for acts of interpersonal violence
• Education and awareness of the community about interpersonal violence
• Compliance with federal regulations regarding violence on campus
