GBL 282 From St Andrews to Augusta: American and Scottish Golf Cultures and Lifestyles
This class looks at the chronological history of the game of golf, with a focus on its foundation in Scotland, to its early development in America at the turn of the 20th century. We will analyze how those two golf-leading nations’ cultural and societal values help explain different courses in their developmental paths. This course will also examine the specific lifestyle of the Scottish people and how it may reflect an overarching national identity that impacts their golfing philosophy. The explosion of mediatized sports will also be discussed and how Scottish and American culture compare in how they have implemented it in golf.
