FRE 321 REEL STORIES: CONTEMPORARY TOPICS THROUGH FILM
This course examines French-speaking cultures through documentaries and films based on “real” stories. Placing films in their historical and cultural context, we consider how cinema provides a window into society, while recognizing that films are cultural products specific to a particular historical moment. Social history, politics, cultural representation, self-expression and artistic creation are some of the topics under consideration. Students watch films outside of class, and class time is dedicated to engaging discussion about the films and related topics and readings.
