GBL 194 Preparatory Seminar for Bodies of Knowledge: Healthcare & the History of Art in Italy
This course helps prepare students academically, interculturally, linguistically and logistically for their short-term global experience. The seminar is offered on campus in the semester prior to the 4 sh global engagement experience. Completion of the pre-departure preparatory seminar is required for participation in GBL 294 Bodies of Knowledge: Healthcare & the History of Art in Italy.
This course will include a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 20 hours of observership/shadowing with a healthcare professional(s). Students who seek to meet a practicum requirement should meet with their advisors for approval before working with GBL 194 faculty to achieve this goal.

- Through successful participation in this pre-departure course, students will
1. begin to identify skills in cultural humility, sensitivity, and cultural competence in a healthcare setting.
a. demonstrate the ability to examine and explore one’s own culture (This outcome also meets Elon Core Goal #1)
b. identify stereotypes, biases, and belief and value systems that are representative of the dominant culture in the United States. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #1 and Elon Core Goal #1) - 2. begin to understand the interdependence of healthcare and culture and the ways that perceptions of health and the body change over time as well as identify some of the key factors that both dictate and reflect those shifts.
a. will be able to articulate connections between the histories of science and the humanities. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #2, 3, 6 and Elon Core Goals #2 & 3)
b. will be able to cite examples of interdependence between these fields of study. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #2, 3, 6, 7 and Elon Core Goal #5, 6 & 7). - 3. be introduced to basic research skills relevant to the sciences and the humanities.
(This goal runs parallel to Elon Core Goals #2, 5 & 6 and all of the outcomes below could be used to assess those goals.)
a. how to analyze a primary source.
b. how to find and summarize appropriate secondary sources.
c. synthesize secondary sources so that they can develop a unique research question - 4. begin to develop knowledge of health profession(s) via completion of an observership for a practicum experience. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #4, 5, 6 and meets Core Goal #3 & 6)
