GBL 294 Bodies of Knowledge: Healthcare & the History of Art in Italy

This course is designed so that students from any major who are interested in the intersection of healthcare and the humanities have a better understanding of perceptions of the body in relation to healthcare and wellness and the history of the body as a symbol of cultural values. The course will build knowledge around the interdependent histories of the arts and sciences and develop skills in the modes of inquiry practiced in science and the humanities. Students will actively participate in a combination of engaged and experiential learning activities within the local community and collaborate with community partner(s) in Florence. Students in this course will integrate theory, knowledge, and skills to support intercultural engagement and the development of cultural competence.

This course will include 6-8 hours of observership/shadowing with a healthcare professional(s).  Students who seek to meet a practicum requirement should meet with their advisors for approval before working with GBL 194 faculty to achieve this goal.

  1. For Goal 1 / Students will have developed skills in cultural humility, sensitivity, and demonstrate emerging skills in cultural competence in a healthcare setting.
    A. Students will develop cultural sensitivity, humility, competence through knowledge of US and Italian culture and practices in, healthcare, health systems and health professions (This outcome also meets Core Goal #3)
    B. Students will understand and provide examples of patient care delivery in culturally diverse settings (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #6 & 7 and Elon Core Goals #6 & 7)
  2. For Goal 2 / Through cultural learning opportunities beyond the healthcare setting, students will have developed skills related to cultural competence in general populations and settings.
    C. Students will develop cultural awareness, sensitivity, humility, within their own culture, demonstrating the ability to examine and explore their own culture, identify stereotypes, biases, and belief and value systems that are representative of the United States. Furthermore, students will demonstrate an understanding of how one’s own biases and belief system may subtly influence the provision of rehabilitation services and lead to cultural imposition. (This outcome also meets Elon Core Goal #1)
    D. Students will develop cultural sensitivity, humility, competence through knowledge of Italian culture and interactions in Italian public & daily life in Florence (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #1 and Elon Core Goal #1)
    E. Students will realize the importance of a life-long professional commitment to cultural competency (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal # 7 & 8 and Elon Core Goal #3)
  3. For Goal 3 / Students will have knowledge of a specific health profession via completion of an observership for a practicum experience.
    A. Students will be exposed to different healthcare professions and the roles these professionals play in the Italian healthcare system. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #4, 5, 6 and meets Core Goal #3 & 6)
    B. Students will accept another worldview regarding healthcare as possible solution to healthcare delivery
  4. For Goal 4 / Students will be to articulate the interdependence of healthcare and culture and the ways that perceptions of health and the body change over time as well as identify some of the key factors that both dictate and reflect those shifts.
    A. Students will develop an understanding of the cultural contexts for the body and its connection to healthcare and wellness. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #2, 3, 6, 7 and Elon Core Goal #5, 6 & 7).
    B. Students will develop an understanding of the history of science and art in Italy. (This outcome also meets Global Engagement student goal #2, 3, 6 and Elon Core Goals #2 & 3)
  5. For Goal 5 / Students will develop basic research skills relevant to science and the humanities. (This goal runs parallel to Elon Core Goals #2, 5 & 6 and all of the outcomes below could be used to assess those goals.)
    A. Students will be able to find relevant primary and secondary sources.
    B. Students will be able to identify the thesis of a scholarly essay.
    C. Students will be able to synthesize scholarly sources to develop a unique research question.
    D. Students will be able to present scholarly information to a widely educated audience.
