NRS 420 Population and Community Health

This course will synthesize nursing theory and public health science to provide a theoretical background for the study of community health nursing. This course will emphasize health promotion, health maintenance and disease prevention among populations. Students will develop skills in recognizing and analyzing the interrelationships between individuals, families, population groups, and communities based in health status. The impact of political, economic, social, environmental, and cultural variables on the health of populations will be examined.

  1. 1. Examine the role of the nurse and discuss appropriate nursing interventions that promote and maintain the health of clients across the healthcare continuum.

  3. 3. Describe nursing roles that meet the emerging health needs of individuals, families, communities and populations.
  4. 4. Discuss trends in lifestyles that will affect the health of communities and create future challenges for nursing.
  5. 5. Apply the process of clinical reasoning to community nursing practice.
  6. 6. Provide care in regard to policy and regulations, cost effective strategies, quality improvement processes and safety.
