Individualized Major A.B. or B.S

A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with an Individualized Major requires the following:

An application, which is made available after consultation with the Coordinator of Individualized Majors. See information at the bottom of this page.

A faculty advisory committee consisting of three faculty members representing at least two disciplines (and ideally three disciplines). One faculty member is designated as the primary mentor, who also serves as academic advisor and the mentor for the capstone project. The primary faculty advisor must be an undergraduate faculty member. Although the committee will typically consist of faculty members who teach primarily undergraduates, all faculty members across the university are eligible.

A curriculum, designed in consultation with the faculty advisory committee. The curriculum must include:

  • completion of the Elon Core Curriculum requirements;
  • a minimum of 28 semester hours at the 3000-4000 level;
  • a minimum of 48 semester hours total;
  • courses from at least three departments or prefixes, with no more than 50% of total credit hours from any one department or prefix;
  • an interdisciplinary capstone project; and
  • a plan for assessing the completed major.

Additional guidelines:

  • In order to be eligible for the individualized major, students must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • At the time of application, the student must have at least two years remaining prior to graduation. Students with sufficient credit hours to graduate in less than two years should supply evidence that they will stay enrolled for at least two years.
  • Upper-level courses in the individualized major will also satisfy the eight-hour Advanced Studies requirement if the individualized major includes: At least 12 hours of upper-level courses in three departments or prefixes; and at least two of the four areas listed under Studies in the Arts and Sciences.
  • The interdisciplinary capstone project may take many forms, as long as the project integrates and ties together the work completed throughout the major.
  • No more than four semester hours of independent research (aka 4999 hours) may be counted towards the major. These hours will typically be used for completion of the capstone project.

Deadline

Rolling deadline, but please note that typically two to three months elapse from the time the student first contacts the coordinator to the time the University Curriculum Committee renders a decision.
