COR 3580 AMERICAN CRIME FICTION THROUGH A LEGAL LENS
American crime fiction represents radical changes in the genre. We will use crime fiction as a means to explore how literary works help our understanding of ethical reasoning and personal and social responsibility, which are fundamental principles of the Elon Core Mission. You will learn about the popularity of crime fiction and its various styles as shaped by American authors and how to identify the cultural, societal, and philosophical influence of crime fiction through research, problem-solving and communication skills. You will study the genre through short readings of fiction and non-fiction literary works and scenes from movies and television series. Students from various disciplines will realize there is more to crime fiction than entertainment and the intellectual challenge of the clue puzzle. You will make sense of the many agendas that might influence the outcome of a criminal investigation including law, politics, social-economic status, and survival agendas of the suspects.
Prerequisite
Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
