Leadership Opportunities
Cohort Leadership Positions
Purpose: To facilitate Physical Therapy Core Values: Accountability, Altruism, Compassion, Caring, Excellence, Integrity, Professional Duty, Social Responsibility within and among all DPT classes.
Procedures: Students may volunteer for the positions, and the class will elect students for each position category as needed. Coursework takes priority over leadership positions. A student may relinquish a position at any time due to personal or academic concerns by contacting the class faculty advisors.
Positions:
- Class Representatives: (class leader and assistant)
- Communicate concerns and information between class and faculty advisors
- Leads class meetings, voting, and conflict resolution.
- Liaison between DPT Department and DPT Class.
- Maintain contact list for the class (current address, email, and phone roster)
- Welcome and assist guest lecturers and part-time faculty
- Represent class at Elon Physical Therapy Student Organization (PTSO) meetings for communication between classes
- Coordinate with class to sign and mail thank you notes for guest speakers.
- Facility Manager (1):
- Ensure that supplies and resources are available for the class.
- Additional responsibilities of the Facilities Manager include, but are not limited to:
- Develop classroom and lab clean-up roster; orientation to new class on lab procedures and cleaning
- Oversee clean up and equipment inventory (between classes and at ends of courses)
- Manage classroom equipment
- Restock clean linens and place soiled linens in the hall for weekly pickup
- Notify Laboratory and Donor Coordinator and/or Department of Physical Therapy Education (DPTE) Program Assistant of broken equipment
- Delegating clean-up tasks within the building including class refrigerator
- Assist assigned faculty with room cleanliness prior to Francis Center events
- Checks/tests all the eye wash stations in the building
- Technology Manager (1):
- Assist with technology errors before IT is called.
- Should be familiar and comfortable with campus technology
- Additional responsibilities of the Technology Manager include, but are not limited to:
- Troubleshoot and/or report issues regarding printers, projectors, and Elon's presentation software, etc.
- Manage AV equipment
- Social In-reach Coordinator (1):
- Coordinate major class social events and graduation gatherings; welcome new class
- Preside at all PTSO Town-hall meetings and coordinate events within and among the School of Health Sciences.
- Additional responsibilities of the In-reach Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
- Organize social events, such as: Tailgating, SHS Formal, Friendsgiving, Mixers.
- Work closely with Outreach Coordinator to maximize student involvement.
- Maintain list of class birthdays to recognize individuals.
- Work closely with the Anatomy program to plan annual Donor Memorial Service (during 1st year only)
- Interprofessional Liaison to the Dean
- Meet with the Dean, Nursing, and PA Liaisons as needed to improve collaboration and communication within the School of Health Sciences
- Inform the Dean, nursing, and PA Liaisons about social events
- Facilitate opportunities for cross discipline social events
- Manage class funds
- Social Outreach Coordinator (1):
- Facilitate and coordinate student participation in professional activities outside class (ex. PT Month, Special Olympics)
- APTA-NC student representative (1 per program): notify class of APTA-NC district meetings, APTA student conclave, and other APTA & APTA-NC meetings & activities
- Preside at all Town-hall meetings and coordinate events outside of the School of Health Sciences.
- Additional responsibilities of the Outreach Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitating community outreach and volunteer opportunities within the class.
- Collaborate with Social In-reach Coordinator to maximize student involvement.
- Interprofessional Liaison to the Dean
- Meet with the Dean and PA/Nursing Liaisons as needed to improve collaboration and communication within the School of Health Sciences
- Inform the Dean and PA/Nursing Liaisons about community events
- Facilitate opportunities for cross discipline social events
- Manage class funds
- Global Learning Opportunity (GLO) Student Representative (1):
- Work closely with Global Learning Opportunities Contact to plan GLO-related meetings for the class
- Additional responsibilities of the GLO Representative include, but are not limited to:
- Investigate new ideas for DPT to facilitate GLO
- Find resources for students interested in GLO
- Represent DPT students at GLO committee meetings as requested
- Communicate student issues and concerns to the committee and relay information back to students
- Facilitate and organize monthly or bimonthly student GLO meetings
- Assist with annual SHS Global Engagement and Research Forum
- Lead annual World Physiotherapy Day celebration
- Recruit GLO Ambassadors to support GLO student activities
- Student Leadership Awards Committee (SLAC) Members (2):
- Facilitate and organize biannual call for student leadership awards
- Committee awards funding for leadership opportunities to student applicants based on anonymous scoring
- PT Representatives to the School of Health Science Student Diversity Committee (2):
- Work closely with the School of Health Sciences Diversity Committee to foster communication regarding organization topics and events.
- Additional responsibilities of Diversity Committee Representative include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitate and organize monthly student diversity meetings and events
- Communicate student issues and concerns to the committee and relay information back to students
- Organize LGBTQIA ally training
- Communicate with PA and nursing Diversity Committee Members
- Participate in Orientation Resource Fair
- Inform students, staff, and faculty of campus cultural events
- American Physical Therapy Association of North Carolina (APTA-NC) Representative (1):
- Share announcements and relevant APTA-NC changes with the students and PTSO Board as needed.
- Act as liaison between Elon’s DPT program and the APTA-NC Student Special Interest Group (SSIG) Board
- Student Leadership Awards Committee (SLAC) (2):
- Facilitate and organize bi-annual call for student leadership awards
- Award funding for leadership opportunities to student applicants based on anonymous rubric-based scoring
- Share announcements and relevant SLAC changes with the students and the PTSO Board as needed.
- Journal of Student Physical Therapy Representative (JOSPTR) (1):
- Share announcements and relevant JOSPTR changes with the class and with the PTSO Board as needed.
- The appointment of this position will occur outside the scope of the class leadership.
