Student Concerns of Mistreatment

We encourage you to use this section of the Elon PA handbook to understand the procedures for reporting concerns and to seek the support you need. By voicing your concerns, you help create a more respectful and nurturing environment for yourself and your fellow students.
Student complaints related to program policies/procedures:
From time to time, students may have concerns that need to be voiced and addressed related to processes, procedures, or operational efficiency.
Common reasons to speak up with these situations may include:
  • Impact to health/safety: tripping hazards, food safety, something is broken, etc.
  • Unprofessional Conduct: Observing or experiencing behavior from faculty, staff, or peers that violate professional standards and ethics.
  • For concerns related to program policies and procedures, first attempt to address the concern with the parties affected. For example, attempt to clarify information directly with the faculty/staff on your own. You can also share concerns with your faculty advisor, your Elon PA Student Society leaders (who will bring information to the program director), or you can go directly to the program director. Of note, this handbook includes information regarding grade appeals and appeals of APPC decisions related to Elon PA.
Mistreatment
You are entitled to a learning environment that is respectful, supportive, and free from mistreatment. Unfortunately, there may be times when you encounter situations that compromise these standards. It is crucial to recognize that addressing such concerns is essential for your well-being and the integrity of our educational community.  Mistreatment can take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal abuse, discrimination, harassment, or any behavior that undermines your dignity and ability to learn. Sharing your concerns about mistreatment is a courageous and necessary step towards fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Common reasons for submitting concerns may include:
  • Verbal Abuse: Experiencing or witnessing derogatory comments, insults, or inappropriate language.
  • Discrimination: Facing unfair treatment based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or other personal characteristics.
  • Harassment: Being subjected to unwanted and inappropriate behavior, whether physical, verbal, or written.
  • Unprofessional Conduct: Observing or experiencing behavior from faculty, staff, or peers that violate professional standards and ethics.
University policies and procedures
The Student Complaint Form provided on the “Student Complaints” section of the Elon University student resources page provides students with an avenue to submit a concern regarding any area on campus for which no other specific process exists.  You can find this form as well as the grievance process for the university accreditor (SACSCOC) at this website: https://www.elon.edu/u/students/complaints/
