EDU2550 Foundations of 21st Century Teaching

This course introduces methods of designing aligned curriculum, instruction, and assessment. It examines critical components of teaching in the contemporary elementary school, including technology integration, approaches to organizing and managing positive and effective learning communities, and a basic understanding of the purpose, use, and interpretation of educational assessments. In order to better understand these and other matters of achievement and behavior, students will use readings, discussions, course assignments, and field experiences to begin addressing contextualized problems of practice.

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to use the Understanding by Design framework to plan curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  2. Students will be able to differentiate between diagnostic, formative and summative applications of assessment, knowing how and when to use each.
  3. Students will be able to know emerging technological pedagogies and teaching strategies including TPACK, NC Digital Competencies, Digital
    Citizenship and common web 2.0 tools.
  4. Students will be able to evaluate research-based strategies for developing respectful and supportive classroom environments for K-5 students.
  5. Students will be able to describe, analyze, and make choices about classroom management experiences from their field placements.
