GBL1870 Preparatory Seminar for Divided Lands; Politics, Borders, and Identities

This course will help prepare students academically, interculturally, and logistically for the corresponding winter-term global experience course. This seminar is offered on campus during the semester previous to the 4sh global engagement experience. Completion of the pre-departure seminar is required for participation in GBL 2870: Divided Lands: Politics, Borders, and Identities.

  1. Describe and explain causes and historical legacies of the conflicts.
  2. Analyze how the role of external and international actors and their conflicting interests (e.g. United Nations, European Union, United States, Britain, Turkey, etc.) influenced the conflicts and post-conflict peacebuilding efforts.
  3. Examine and evaluate their own perspective on global and personal responsibility as a response to human rights abuses, injustice, and conflict in other countries
  4. Describe and compare the effects of history and war/conflict on contemporary borders and cultural, religious, and political identities
