The concept of Help has been described as “the original human dilemma.” What do we do when we desire to help? Do we listen carefully to those we intend to help so that we understand how they identify their need? How do we avoid imposing our will? How do we balance our own self-care with the costs of serving the interests of others? In this course we will work on parallel tracks: the theoretical and the personal: we will seek to understand what genuine Help entails as well as our personal motivations for becoming Helpers and identify strategies for remaining healthy.
Someday you may be a coach, teacher, director of a youth program, nurse, social worker for a government agency or an NGO, serve as president of a community bank, a hospital administrator, or in some other leadership position. In such places you will face the challenges of how to serve the interests of the people and institutions you lead, how to be genuinely helpful and not overbearing, and how not to lose touch with your own soul. This course will explore topics such as servant leadership, living an undivided life within corporate cultures, and accessing resources that lead to personal wholeness and a healthy self-regard.
