ACT 3290 Shakespeare in Film

This course will examine a number of films based on the plays written by William Shakespeare. It will also provide some historical perspective about the playwright and the theatre for which he wrote; and will examine the nature of the language in his plays, paying particular attention to the verse. It will consider the choices of various filmmakers in creating works based on Shakespeare’s plays, and will draw upon the writings of contemporary scholars in examining these works.

Course Outcomes

1. Develop the ability to critically observe performances of the works of William Shakespeare on film, television, or stage.
2. Compare and contrast differing film representations of the same play, and examine varied Shakespearean plays (including tragedies, comedies, and at least one history play).
3. Examine the choices of superb filmmakers and performers, from the early twentieth century to the present.
4. Provide an opportunity for each student to encounter the basic challenges of filming Shakespeare’s plays via the group project.
