BIO 3210 Principles of Biochemistry
This is a one-semester course that focuses on the major concepts of biochemistry. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, enzyme kinetics, cofactors, cellular energetics and major metabolic pathways. The course is administered in a flipped style; students watch pre-recorded lectures prior to class. The majority of class time is spent engaging with the content through case studies, problem sets and other activities in order to gain a comprehensive understanding the of topics. This course counts as a biology elective, but does not count towards the biochemistry major.
Prerequisite
BIO 1112/BIO 1113, CHM 1120, and either CHM 2110 OR BIO 2212, and in the third or fourth year of study.

Course Outcomes
- • Students will understand how the amino acid sequence of proteins determines folding, structure and function and how dysregulated folding can result in disease
- • Students will understand that genetic sequence, mutation and repair are at the foundation of protein related diseases
- • Students will understand enzymatic reactions (including the role of vitamins and cofactors) and basic kinetics and learn how modulating proper enzymatic function can result in adverse health consequences
- • Students will learn the biochemical basis of metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids and their role in normal function and energetics and how dysregulation can result in a variety of health conditions
