BIO 3240 Endocrinology

This course offers a deep dive into the endocrine system, exploring the synthesis, distribution and regulation of hormones in both mammals and selected non-mammalian vertebrates. Through a comparative and integrative approach, we will examine how hormones influence processes like growth, gender differentiation, metabolism, weight control, diabetes, stress response, and environmental endocrine disruption.

Building on a foundation of cell and human biology and gene flow, this course will examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms of hormone action including paracrine, autocrine, and endocrine signaling; transmembrane and intracellular pathways; and regulation of gene transcription. Case studies and scientific literature will be used to anchor discussion in real-world and research-based contexts.

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify and define the chemical properties of hormones, their target receptors and target cells.
  2. Students will integrate concepts from cell biology, genetics and/ or physiology students will analyze and explore the biochemical mechanisms of action of peptides, steroid and amine hormones and explain the interrelationships among the human body systems in health and disease
  3. Students will reflect on their own learning by assessing strengths and gaps in their conceptual understanding and develop strategies for synthesizing and integrating information. They will critically explore endocrine related research articles and evaluate how emerging evidence integrates with their existing knowledge of endocrine regulation.
