MUS 4800 Music Industry Workshop
This course is designed to enhance applications relative to music industry concepts with a focus on record label processes. In collaboration with Limelight Records, students in this course will complete market research and analysis on music industry trends with the goal of creating and applying a sustainable business model for new music. Additionally, students will participate in signing and managing student-recording artists, gaining experience with music industry best practices.

- Students will develop and execute artist branding, including social media strategies and audience engagement plans.
- Students will apply music business concepts to artist releases such as booking shows and merchandising.
- Students will create promotional campaigns for independent music projects, including digital advertising, grassroots strategies, and press outreach.
- Students will plan and execute live music events, including budgeting, venue selection, ticketing, event promotion, and concert logistics.
- Students will navigate the process of self-releasing music, including distribution, streaming strategies, and playlisting.
- Students will evaluate revenue opportunities for independent artists, such as crowdfunding, licensing, session work, and sponsorships.
- Students will engage in hands-on negotiation exercises and contract analysis to better understand artist agreements, performance contracts, and licensing deals.
- Students will explore career pathways in the modern music industry by networking with professionals, analyzing job opportunities, and identifying entrepreneurial ventures.
