MUS 4865 Advanced Topics in Songwriting

This course explores advanced topics in songwriting, with rotating topics that may include in-depth song analysis, advanced lyric writing, melody and harmony development, intricate chord progressions, rhythm and groove, collaborative songwriting, arrangement strategies, stylistic exploration, and the creative process. Through hands-on projects, critiques, and discussions, students will refine their craft and develop a deeper understanding of songwriting as both an art form and a professional discipline.

1. Students will develop the ability to write expressive and meaningful lyrics, using advanced techniques in storytelling, rhyme, and metaphor.
2. Students will gain proficiency in composing memorable and emotionally resonant melodies.
3. Students will understand and apply complex harmonic concepts in their songwriting.
4. Students will demonstrate a solid understanding of music theory fundamentals as they apply to songwriting, including scales, modes, intervals, and rhythm.
5. Students will cultivate their unique songwriting voice and style.
6. Students will acquire the skills necessary to record, produce, and present professional-quality demo tracks of their songs, through basic recording techniques and arrangements.
