REL 2370 Meaning and Happiness

This course examines how individuals and communities define and pursue meaning and happiness. Exploring religious, spiritual, scientific, philosophical, sociological, and historical viewpoints, we will investigate the factors that shape our understanding of a meaningful and happy life.

1. Students will demonstrate their ability to think critically about the socially constructed nature of that which can be categorized as “religious.”
2. Students will recognize and explain ways in which “religion” has cultural, political, and/or economic significance and/or ways in which cultural, political, and/or economic phenomena have significance for “religion.”
3. Students will critically evaluate the concepts of meaning and happiness, exploring their relationship to diverse ideological, philosophical, and religious frameworks.
4. Students will connect theoretical insights to real-world issues, demonstrating an understanding of how cultural and ideological frameworks impact personal and communal well-being.
