LAW 774 Advanced Family Law Practice

In this class, students will work through a family law case from the initial client interview through a mediated settlement. Half of the class will represent the husband and the other half will represent the wife, each group divided into two teams. At various times during the semester a member of the team will take the role of the client and another will take the role of the lawyer to give team members practical experience. Topics covered include child custody, child support, post-separation support and alimony, equitable distribution, attorney's fees, tax implications, settlement agreements, appraisals, and methods of alternative dispute resolution. North Carolina Family and Related Laws Annotated and a calculator are required.
