COR 417 LITERACY AND POWER
What is literacy? How does literacy relate to access and power? In this class, students will consider how people develop literacy, what it means to be literate across academic and non-academic contexts, and why people struggle with literacy. Students will examine their own histories of and experiences with literacy and will compare those with literacy practices of people from various communities and cultures. The course will also explore (and critique) ways that literate persons might engage with those who lack access to discourses of power. Based on work with community partners, students will ask theoretical and practical questions about the uses of literacy and how literacy is taught. Students will ultimately apply their learning to create a literacy-focused action project that addresses a contemporary literacy challenge. This course is writing intensive. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
