TDT 345 Sound Design for Live Events

This class will introduce students to the principals of sound design in order to understand the way sound is used in the entertainment industry and beyond. This class will encompass research, observation, discussion, design projects, class presentations and class participation. The emphasis is on learning the role of the sound designer, the properties of aural atmospheres, current sound technologies, its language and its application to live theatrical events and other related fields.

  1. Students will learn the way a Sound Designer operates within the creative process of theatre.
  2. Students will learn how to create and source the sounds needed in to fulfill criteria set forth by the needs of the production.
  3. Students will learn to create and develop concepts to support a creative process.
  4. Students will learn to demonstrate ways that sound can be used to create mood, give information, set tone, and trigger emotion.
  5. Students will learn to create sound collages inspired by visual images or other prompts.
  6. Students will learn to listen and understand the sonic arts in new ways through the exploration of contemporary audio theory and its implications.
