In addition, each Music Education major must complete the following:

(a) 2 semester hours in the primary (principal) applied music area each semester for a minimum of 10 semester hours (one semester at the 3000 level is required) 10 sh

(b) successful completion of the adjudicated degree recital (MUS 0030)

(c) ensemble from MUS 1010, MUS 1051, MUS 1030, MUS 1050, and MUS 1020 7 sh

  • All majors must complete one of these ensembles outside of the primary instrument
  • All music education majors must take three semester hours of MUS 1051, University Chorale, and one of these hours must be a concurrent enrollment in MUS 3531, Choral Methods and Literature, or MUS 3538, Conducting
  • In addition, students whose primary instrument is wind or percussion must complete two semesters of MUS 1020 (Wind and percussion majors must complete two semesters of MUS 1020; all majors must complete one of these ensembles outside of major instrument/voice)

(d) Keyboard proficiency

(e) MUS 0010 Departmental Recital each semester of residency as a Music Education major

In addition, majors whose primary instrument is voice must take MUS 2510 Diction for Singers I and MUS 2511 Diction for Singers II (instrumental majors are not required to take these courses). In addition, all music education majors must take and pass Piano Proficiency. The required skills to pass the Piano Proficiency can be acquired in MUS 1501 - MUS 1504 (1 semester hour each) or by taking applied piano lessons.

MUS 0030 Degree Recital is a performance on the primary instrument. The requirements are governed by a rubric approved by the SOE and adjudicated by a music faculty committee.

Program Outcomes

Demonstrate mastery level of Content Knowledge by passing all required music courses and student teaching

Perform, at a high level, the technical skills needed to pass all applied juries and MUS 0030 Degree Recital

Master (pass MUS 3530) and utilize various technologies to facilitate and enhance planned instruction

Demonstrate knowledge of music history and theory to facilitate teaching of various styles from various time periods and to perform music from each style period authentically

Demonstrate Piano Proficiency by passing the Piano Proficiency requirement and by passing classes, which have piano proficiency embedded in the course

Total Credit Hours: 162-164

Well- researched (with substantial documentation citing reputable sources) and well-written program notes are part of the requirement for MUS 0030. The Program notes are drafted by students and reviewed by the instructor of MUS 0030. The notes are then submitted to the faculty adjudicators one week prior to the Recital Hearing. The notes must be revised, if needed, based on the suggestions by the faculty before they can be submitted for publication in the official program.
