MUS 3352 ORCHESTRATION

This course is an in-depth study of the characteristics of modern orchestral instruments, including their ranges, transpositions, tonal and technical qualities, and how to combine them. Representative scores from the Classical, Romantic, and Modern repertoire will be analyzed, and assignments will consist of scoring for ensembles of various size and instrumentation, culminating in a work for full orchestra.

1. Familiarity with all of the common instruments of the modern symphony orchestra, including their ranges, transpositions, tonal and technical characteristics, and how to combine them.
2. Learn the essential concepts and terminology that relate to instrumental techniques such as pizzicato, arco, single tonguing, double and triple tonguing, tremolo, string bowing techniques, use of mutes, special or extended techniques, and their various notations.
3. Understand how to translate a short piano work into an orchestration for larger ensembles such as string quintet, woodwind quintet, brass quintet, and full orchestra, taking full advantage of the unique timbral and dynamic qualities of available instruments, while working within the technical norms or limitations for each instrument.
