School of Health Sciences Awards
Charge: The School of Health Sciences (SHS) Awards Committee has the charge of coordinating and facilitating the selection of the annual SHS award recipients.
Process: SHS awards will be given annually to one recipient per award. The awards committee will define the selection process, set specific dates for the selection process, and send out a call for nominations. Nominations will be made electronically through the Dean’s office care of this email address SHSFacStaffAwards24@elon.edu.

All members of the SHS community can nominate individuals affiliated with the SHS. Self- nominations are admissible. Award selections will be made by the SHS Awards Committee, comprised of faculty representatives from each department and a staff member. Members of the SHS Awards Committee, like all members of the SHS community, are eligible for any awards and will recuse themselves from discussions related to the specific award selection process they are nominated for. Each nomination letter should be no more than 3 pages in length and clearly name the nominee and the nominator. Additional materials that provide evidence of excellence specific to the nomination should also be included. The following awards are recognized in the SHS:
Excellence in Teaching / Mentoring Award
The Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring Award is designed to recognize the full-time SHS community member who exemplifies excellence in teaching / mentoring. Consistent with Elon’s emphasis of outstanding teaching, this award seeks to recognize a full-time faculty or staff member who has demonstrated outstanding teaching / mentoring in the previous three years.
Evidence of engaging students in active learning and applications of theory to practice in substantive and meaningful ways will be valued in the selection. The nomination must include a statement of teaching accomplishments of the nominee, as well as specific information on how the nominee’s teaching or mentoring has positively impacted students, alumni and/or colleagues. Examples of teaching/mentoring endeavors include collaborative teaching activities across departments, interprofessional activities, or holistic teaching.
Excellence in Scholarship Award
The Excellence in Scholarship Award is designed to recognize the full-time SHS community member who exemplifies excellence in scholarship that advances the knowledge of one’s discipline or supports one’s teaching as the hallmark of the Elon Teacher-Scholar model.
Scholarship is broadly defined to include scholarship of teaching and learning, interprofessional work, and community-based scholarship, as well as peer-reviewed traditional disciplinary work. Evidence of scholarship may be demonstrated by publications, conference presentations, and other appropriate venues. Collaborative efforts with colleagues and with students are valued aspects of scholarly endeavors. The Excellence in Scholarship Award is based on the nominee’s work while employed at Elon University. The nomination must include a statement of the accomplishments of the nominee with supporting details describing the impact of the nominee’s work on the discipline.
Excellence in Service, Leadership, Collaboration
The Excellence in Service, Leadership, and/or Collaboration Award is designed to recognize the full-time SHS community member who has served to advance the School of Health Sciences and Elon University through service, leadership, and/or collaboration. Service leadership, or collaboration on Elon or professional organization committees, recruitment activities, and other tasks that advance Elon’s strategic priorities, fostering inclusive community, health and wellness and/or operational excellence will be considered for this award. The nomination must include a statement of the accomplishments of the nominee as well as specific details on how the service, leadership, and/or collaboration of the nominee has advanced the mission and work of the SHS and Elon University.
Staff Excellence Award
The Staff Excellence Award recognizes a full-time staff member affiliated with the SHS who significantly advances the work of the SHS and their department or unit. Whether working directly with students, faculty, and staff, or behind the scenes, their contributions help fulfill our mission of supporting all students, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, and engaging students in becoming dedicated and empathetic healthcare professionals. The nomination must include a statement of the accomplishments of the staff member. The letter of nomination should include specific details on how the nominee has impacted the work of the SHS and their department or unit.
