SHS Piano Use Policy
(updated 6/21/2024 c. Johansson)
We are pleased to provide an opportunity for piano music to contribute to the well-being of all members of the School of Health Sciences. To be fully enjoyed in a community setting, however, piano use must take place within guidelines that are respectful of others in our shared spaces.
Who:
- The piano is intended for use by Elon University SHS students, faculty, and staff. When multiple people wish to use the piano, access will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, with student requests prioritized over those of faculty and staff.
- The piano keyboard is to remain locked when not in use. The key is located in a lockbox on the wall to the right of the piano. The code for the lockbox is the same as the lab classroom code.
When:
Piano playing is permitted during the following times:
- Monday through Friday: before 8:30 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.
- Wednesday andFriday: 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday: unrestricted
These hours are subject to change.
Any official university events being held in the Francis Center may preclude piano use during these designated times.
Requests from students for quiet study time should be prioritized over playing time.
How:
Pianos are expensive to repair and must be treated carefully. Anyone using the piano is expected to adhere to the following guidelines. Failure to abide by any of these policies can result in loss of playing privileges.
- No food or drink—including bottled water—is allowed on the piano! Even small amounts of water on the keys or strings of a piano can cause extensive damage. All liquids should be kept away from the piano.
- Do not set items such as books, bags, or other containers on the piano.
- Help keep the piano clean. Use good hand hygiene before playing and avoid wearing lotion.
- Very loud or harsh playing can be disruptive to others and damaging to the piano. Be considerate when choosing when and how to play.
- Lock the piano keyboard immediately after you finish playing and return the key to the lockbox.
- Do not share the key or lockbox code with anyone outside the School of Health Sciences.
