Learning Outcomes

  1. Laboratory exercises will build on basic and applied concepts discussed in the lecture portion of this class.
  2. Students will use basic microbiology techniques to investigate the concepts of bacterial cell walls and their functions, isolating microbes, quantification methods, how different conditions effect growth rate, controlling microbial growth with antiseptics and antibiotics, and horizontal gene transfer
  3. Systematically apply the scientific method of investigation and hypothesis testing in case studies and identification of unknown microorganisms.
  4. To strengthen student’s understanding of microbiology, they will engage in various microbial and molecular techniques and have the opportunity to exercise critical thinking skills as they strive to analyze results to answer the central question posed in each exercise
