HEU1100 Introduction to Flatwater Kayaking
This is an introductory course in the basics of flatwater (lake and river) kayaking. This course will focus on paddling skills, water safety, and navigation. Students will develop the ability to effectively plan a flatwater kayaking trip while understanding water features and kayaking technique. This course meets in a nontraditional format and will include weekend full day paddling trips.

Course Outcomes
- 1. Kayaking Skills: Students will understand basic kayaking skills and how to move a boat effectively through the water.
- 2. Hydrography: Students will demonstrate the ability to read and navigate common features of a river, including rapids, lines, eddies, and strainers.
- 3. Rescue Techniques: Students will understand and practice different types of kayaking rescues, including towing, T-rescues, wet exits, and rolls.
- 4. Expedition Leadership: Students will explore kayak camping and expedition paddling, including effectively packing a boat and maintaining proper paddling posture to reduce injuries.
- 5. Technical Skills: Students will identify and use the safe and proper operation and maintenance of equipment in order to ensure the safety of participants.
