HEU1120 Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking

This is an introductory course in the basics of whitewater kayaking. This course will focus on paddling skills, whitewater safety, and technique. Students will develop an ability to understand river features and how to navigate rapids through reading the river. This course meets in a nontraditional format and will include an overnight trip to paddle on a river in western North Carolina.

HealthEU (HEU) courses are designed to promote and empower individuals in adopting health-enhancing behaviors. Courses address one or more dimensions (physical, emotional, social, financial, purpose, and community wellness), while also reflecting on the holistic, intertwined nature of wellness.

Learning Outcomes

  1. 1. Kayaking Skills: Students will understand basic whitewater kayaking skills and how to move a boat effectively through the water. Students will understand the basics of paddle strokes, parts of a boat, and safety equipment.
  2. 2. Hydrography: Students will demonstrate the ability to read and navigate common features of a river, including rapids, lines, eddies, and strainers.
  3. 3. Rescue Techniques: Students will understand and practice different types of kayaking rescues, including towing, T-rescues, wet exits, and rolls.
  4. 4. Technical Skills: Students will identify and use the safe and proper operation and maintenance of equipment in order to ensure the safety of participants.
