Exam Review

Reminder: Sharing information about the exam with anyone is considered a violation of academic integrity. Students violating this policy undergo a university review process and will result in professional sanctions from the university and the program. For clarity, “information” includes, but is not limited to, topics, correct answers, and incorrect answers.

MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMS IN EXAMSOFT: For multiple choice exams delivered with ExamSoft, the ExamSoft exam settings will include the opportunity for immediate review of incorrect responses. The purpose of an exam review is to allow every student to review concepts missed in their recent exams. The purpose is NOT to have a discourse (between students or students and faculty) over details of exam items. Students should review the exam, noting how and why they missed questions. Examples: I misread the question or answer choice, I confused two concepts, I changed my answer from the right to the wrong one, I didn’t understand what the question was asking, I just didn’t know it/I guessed.

The instructors will “enable feedback” in the exam settings. During the immediate review, if a student has a concern about a test item, they should first attempt to provide feedback using this mechanism. If this doesn’t work, they should write their name on their scratch paper and list the concern, then signal to the proctor there is information to review when turning that page in after the exam. The student should include enough information to understand which question it is (all exam items are randomized). Examples could include: “I think there are two answers”, “The question is missing a key detail”, “This seems to be keyed incorrectly”, “This topic was not included in the course instructional objectives.”   Please note that sending exam feedback through the testing platform or on scratch paper after the exam does NOT constitute an appeal of a test item.  Please see the Student Handbook for details of the process for submitting an appeal of a test item.

OPEN-ENDED EXAMS IN EXAMSOFT: Open-ended exams given with ExamSoft require grading that does not allow for immediate review. The course instructor will set the exam to “delayed review” and address the timing of review with students (in class or outside of class). If the open-ended exam was a “paper” exam—no photos should be taken of the feedback.

FEEDBACK ON OSCE assignments: Students will receive feedback on paper from their simulated patient experiences. No photos/scans/images should be made of ANY graded rubric. If the instructor wants you to retain access to your personal performance, they will provide you with a digital copy.  This information should not be shared with anyone, including classmates, any newly admitted students, or prospective students.

If a student continues to have concerns after exam review, they should consider completing an item appeal following the procedures in the course syllabus. If the student does not wish to appeal but needs further clarification on how they are missing concepts, they should schedule a 1:1 discussion with an instructor.

Refer to the course syllabus for instructions for appeals to individual exam items.

Students with exam scores between 70 and 80 are showing development of knowledge or skills but reviewing the exam with the instructor and making a plan of improvement based on that information is recommended for continued growth. Students who score <70 on exams need to make larger strides to master material and must contact their course instructor within a week of the exam to plan remediation.
