ENS 2160 Earth Science

Earth science is the study of physical Earth materials and processes and their integration with the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Centered in the field of geology, this course introduces students to fundamental geoscience concepts and provides basic training in methods for the study of the physical Earth. Concepts will be applied to better understand and seek solutions to coupled environmental-social challenges of modern society.

  1. Students will be able to interpret and predict the occurrence of rock types, structures, processes, landforms, regional crustal characteristics, and long-term landscape changes based on the tectonic setting of a location.
  2. Students will be able to synthesize answers to original questions about Earth history by identifying reliable sources of information, reading and summarizing peer-reviewed literature, and analyzing the process of geoscience investigation and the nature of geologic evidence across multiple sub-disciplines.
  3. Students will be able to communicate about Earth history and the process of geoscience in an engaging way to a non-specialist audience.
