MGT 4260 Data Mining for Managerial Decision Making
This course will change the way you think about data, artificial intelligence, and their role in business. Businesses, governments, and individuals create massive collections of data as a byproduct of their activity. Increasingly, decision-makers and systems rely on intelligent technologies—including AI—to analyze data systematically and improve decision-making. Automating analytical and decision-making processes is often necessary because of the volume of data and the speed with which new data are generated. We examine how data mining and AI technologies can be used to improve decision making and study the principles and techniques that underlie them. We will examine real-world examples and cases to place these techniques in context, to develop data-analytic thinking and AI literacy, and to illustrate that proper application is as much an art as it is a science. In addition, we will work “hands-on” with Python and GenAI tools to practice both traditional data mining and AI-assisted analysis.
Course Outcomes
- Approach business problems data-analytically and AI-literately. Think carefully and systematically about whether and how data and AI can improve business performance, to make better-informed decisions for management, marketing, investment, etc.
- Be able to interact competently on the topic of data mining and AI for business intelligence. Know the basics of data mining and AI processes, algorithms, and systems well enough to interact with business managers, expert data miners, consultants, etc.
- Have had Python and Generative AI hands-on experience mining data. Be prepared to follow up on business ideas or opportunities by using both traditional data mining techniques and AI-assisted analysis responsibly.
