COR 434 GENDER IN ARCHAEOLOGY
This class will address the topic of gender in the ancient world from an interdisciplinary perspective, with a special focus on archaeology. We will explore the topic of engendering archaeology from theoretical, methodological, and data driven perspectives. We will examine gender and its expression in the ancient world in these specific ways: the theoretical underpinnings of feminist theory; the historical development of an “engendered” past; the representation of gender in archaeology and art history by scholars; the representation of gender in the ancient world by its culturally relevant inhabitants; the methodologies employed in the investigation of gender in archaeology; and finally the impact of feminist theory on the profession or practice of archaeology. In examining these intersections of gender and the ancient world much attention will be paid to the complexities of representation, as seen in the past, present, and future. This course is writing intensive. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
