FRE 348 CULTURAL SHIFTS IN FRANCE THROUGH MUSIC
In this course, students will explore a specific topic related to France and the Francophone World via musical, literary, historical, cultural and socio‐political texts as well as film and media clips. The culminating capstone project entails a collaborative creation and public performance of original and existing texts in French set to music that students may compose or choose themselves in order to narrate/interpret the (hi)stories they learned. Students will hone skills in language, textual analysis, and cultural commentary. Enrolled students are expected to take an active role in the final production, either as performers, technical and artistic support, or by taking on other necessary duties. No prior music or production experience is required. Taught in French.

FRE 222 or placement at the 300 level.

Learning Outcomes
- Examine important moments, stories, groups and individuals from the period and topic being studied.
- Consider and analyze different approaches to interpreting the past and what it means to think historically.
- Hone your skills in textual analysis and interpretation through the in-depth study of literary works, cultural products, and propaganda of the era as well as both French and American accounts of this part of world history.
- Demonstrate your capacities as creative thinkers and problem solvers via the successful production of a full-length performance in French, working on various aspects of the production including: publicity, set design, musical and lyrical composition, and the like.
- Improve your speaking and listening skills in French through daily classroom discussion and active participation in the production.
- Improve your writing skills in French through written homework, reflective in-class writing, and a critical essay.
