EDU 451 TEACHING DIVERSE LEARNERS
This course is designed to prepare teachers and those interested in education to work effectively in today’s inclusive classrooms. The course is divided into three sections: Theoretical foundations for teaching diverse learners, critical self-reflection, and types of diversities. Types of diversities will be the central focus of the course and will include five major topics: 1) Diversity of ability which includes topics and history of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA); 2) racial, cultural and ethnic diversity and the role of multicultural education; 3) linguistic diversity and the needs of students for whom English is a second language; 4) socio-economic diversity and the effects of poverty on learning; and 5) other diversities, such as religion and gender.
