The International Business major provides students with the business acumen, cross-cultural awareness and international experiences required to function effectively in a complex global business environment.
There are two tracks for completing the International Business major. The first requires a semester abroad. The second requires two years abroad; students completing this track will earn dual bachelor’s degrees: one from Elon and one from a partner university in Europe.
A Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a major in International Business requiring only one study abroad experience requires the following courses:

Regional Area Course 4 sh
Four hours of 300/400 level course work that explicitly has an international geographic-regional focus in the course description and complements the student’s language proficiency, chosen from any of the following: art history, English, environmental science, geography, history, philosophy, political science and policy studies, religious studies, theatre, world languages and cultures. Geographic regions include Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Global Politics and Society Course 4 sh
Four hours of 300/400 level course work that explicitly has a global or international (non-region specific) focus depicted in the course description, chosen from any of the following: communications, geography, health and human performance, history, human service studies, political science and policy studies, psychology, religious studies, sociology and anthropology.
For only those students double-majoring in International Business, these elective hours can count towards their upper-level Elon Core Curriculum requirements.
Substitutions: One or more of these courses can be replaced by coursework abroad, provided the student has taken MGT 424. Substitute courses must be upper-division courses and may be taught in the language of the host institution. Study abroad substitutions must be approved in advance by the chair of the department. If additional substitutions are necessary because of study abroad curriculum changes, the department chair will approve when possible the available substitute options which meet the requirements of the international business major.
Additional requirements
REQUIRED MINOR OR DOUBLE MAJOR: To promote academic depth, all students must complete a minor in World Languages and Cultures OR a second major of the student's choosing.
INTERMEDIATE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Students must attain intermediate proficiency in a modern world language by:
(a) passing a modern world language course at the 222 level OR placing above the 222 level;
and
(b) taking AT LEAST one course at Elon in their chosen language.
SEMESTER ABROAD: International business majors are required to study abroad for a semester. It is recommended, but not required, that students choose a region or country relevant to their language proficiency.
*Total number of hours depends on the number of internship hours and the amount of world language needed to meet the world language requirement.
