COR 351 THE IDEA OF THE INDIAN IN RECENT AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE
This seminar will address how, why, and with what consequences Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries concocted so many different ideas and images about American Indians. From art, to literature, to politics, to media, to popular culture, Americans have constantly revised their ideas about what Indianness is and about what it means. These images and ideas have little relation to reality, but they nonetheless have very deep meaning. The course includes a research project and requires a serious commitment to careful reading and writing. This course is writing intensive. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
