COR 3450 GENDER ISSUES IN EDUCATION

Increased access to education is frequently touted as the key to gender equity, economic development, and political empowerment. We will investigate these claims by exploring  approaches to gender equity in the international arena, learning about education as a right, as a means for increasing human capital, and as a way of helping all people reach their full potential. We will then move to historical topics in the United States such as the impact of Title IX on education and athletic participation.  Finally we will cover current gender issues such as disparities in school discipline, special education, college attendance, and the pursuit of STEM careers. Throughout, we will examine the way that gender interacts with other social categories including race, religion, and socio-economic status. For the capstone project, each student will research a topic that integrates themes from the class knowledge they have learned throughout their time at Elon.
