COR 3630 HISTORY, CULTURE AND ART OF IRAQ

Iraq is the land of Mesopotamia, the cultural center of the Islamic world, an oil rich land, and the country once ruled by a dictator – Saddam Hussain. Many Americans know very little about this country and why the US government decided to send US and coalition troops there in 2003. Much of what they know comes from the media or books based on US or European perspectives. This course will look at the country of Iraq from a historic, economic, political and media studies perspective. In order to have a better understanding of the consequences of this invasion on the present and future state of Iraq, we need to know more about this country. By learning the history, the culture, and the way Iraqis think, this course will help students learn more about this country, about the war, and why Iraq continues to face immense challenge
