MGT 4250 DATA VISUALIZATION AND STORYTELLING

Data has become a core strategic asset to gain and maintain competitive advantage for today’s business. As a result, data analytics, the process of transforming data into actionable insights, has a profound impact on corporate decision-making and strategies. In this course, you will extensively apply a practical business problem-driven approach—identifying real-world business problems first and then developing appropriate techniques to solve them. You will explore various data analytics techniques and their applications to support business strategies. Particularly, you will develop robust skillsets in data visualization, an increasingly important component in data analytics. You will gain hands-on experience on using popular software tools (Python and Tableau) to analyze business data and investigate current analytics trends and propose new business opportunities.

Prerequisite

MGT 3100 is a required prerequisite to ensure students have a basic understanding of basic data analytics concepts and a commonly used programming language (Python) prior to starting this more advanced class. MGT 3230 is a required prerequisite to ensure students have a good understanding of how organizations function and decision-making processes.

This course will serve as an advanced/capstone class in the Business Analytics discipline to develop skillsets in applying powerful data analytics and visualization tools to solve real-world business problems.

Course Outcomes

  1. At the knowledge level (Module 1), students will be able to understand key data analytics/visualization techniques and professionally describe how they are strategically used by businesses to gain a competitive advantage.
  2. At the application level (Module 2), students will be able to apply data analytics to analyze and visualize real-world business data using Python and Tableau to inform strategic business decision-making.
  3. At the design/creation level (Module 3), students will be able to evaluate emerging trends/technologies in data analytics/visualization and design/create innovative techniques to analyze data for business strategies.
