COR 4490 Personalized Medicine

This course explores how recent developments in technology will influence the customization of healthcare into what is termed personalized medicine and what impact that will have on society. In this course, we will briefly cover basic principles of molecular genetics and genomics and then study how advances in DNA technology and our understanding of genetic variation are making it possible to create a new level of personalized diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. We will explore, incorporate and synthesize economic, social, ethical, legal, and policy issues surrounding personalized medicine. This course is writing intensive. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
