COR 3245 Ripple Effects: The Unexpected Impacts of Big Decisions
Well-intentioned initiatives often produce surprising results – both beneficial and harmful. This integrative capstone seminar examines real-world cases where decisions generated unexpected consequences, from minimum wage laws to environmental action initiatives to technological innovations. Through debates, simulations, systems mapping, and the application of ethical frameworks, you'll analyze why unintended consequences occur and how to navigate their complex trade-offs. Your capstone project requires you to consider a proposed change to Elon University or the local community, predict its consequences, and argue whether the intended benefits outweigh possible unintended harms, defending your position through written analysis and oral debate. Learn to wade into the complexity of real-world issues, examine solutions from multiple perspectives, and take a stance on how to proceed despite uncertainty. This course is writing intensive. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
