COR 3640 Language and Power
Language makes up the fabric of our lives. It is fundamentally human, so integral to our identities that we often cannot see beyond the basic meaning it conveys. And yet, language is both a lens and a tool, reinforcing existing realities and shaping new ways forward, keeping systems of oppression in place and allowing us to push against them. In this course students will learn to bring language and power into focus, spurred to think about the meaning behind the spoken and non-verbal communication we use every day. By examining attitudes, biases, and stereotypes, students will explore language as a window into our collective history, experience, and ultimately what it means to be human. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study. This course is writing intensive.
Prerequisite
COR 1100 or COR 0011. Open to students in the third or fourth year of study.
