Remediation

Remediation

This policy outlines the procedures for remediation following unsatisfactory performance on course assessments, OSCEs/skills assessments, and program summative assessments. The goal of remediation is to identify learning deficits, support student success, and ensure competency while maintaining academic standards. (A3.14c)

Didactic Assessment Remediation

Course Assessments

Threshold for Remediation

A score of <70% on a formative exam requires remediation.

Remediation Process

Student should immediately initiate contact with course director following receiving a score of <70% on a formative exam.

Student meets with the course director to review missed questions.

Course director identifies areas of improvement and assigns an informal remediation task (e.g., written assignment, narrative, diagram).

The student has two weeks to complete the remediation requirements assigned by the course director.

Students submit the remediation assignment by the deadline.

Course director reviews and determines whether the knowledge gap has been met or remains unmet.

If the student does not successfully complete the remediation task, they will be referred to the Academic Performance and Advancement Committee (APAC). APAC will:

Review all relevant materials

Meet with the student

Develop a proposed action plan, including required steps and a timeline for completion, for approval by the Program Director

Notify the Program Director upon the student’s successful completion of the action plan

Ensure the student has satisfactorily completed and exited the action plan by the end of the term

Remediation does not result in a grade change.

Documentation

Successful completion is determined at the discretion of the course director or APAC when needed.

Documentation of remediation is scanned into the student’s file.

OSCEs and Skills Assessments

Threshold for Remediation

A score of <70% requires the student to remediate and repeat the OSCE, skills check-off, or patient presentation.

Remediation Process

Student should immediately initiate contact with course director following receiving a score of <70% on an OSCE or skills assessment.

Student meets with the course director

Course director reviews areas of improvement with student

Remediation will be developed by the course director

For recorded assessments, student will review their encounter and perform a self-reflection

Clinical Year Remediation

Clinical Assessments

Threshold for Remediation

If the minimum passing score is not achieved on a clinical year assessment

PAEA End of Rotation (EOR) exam <70% requires remediation

Formative OSCE and skills assessment <70% requires remediation

Remediation Process

Student should immediately initiate contact with course director following receiving a score of <70% on a formative exam.

Students meets with the course director to review missed questions.

Course director identifies areas of improvement and assigns an informal remediation task (e.g., written assignment, narrative, diagram).

The student has two weeks to complete the remediation requirements assigned by the course director for formative OSCEs and skills assessments.

The student has until the end of the subsequent rotation to complete the remediation requirements for PAEA End of Rotation exams.

Ensure the student has satisfactorily completed and exited the action plan by the required time.

Remediation does not result in a grade change.

Documentation

Successful completion is determined at the discretion of the course director or APAC when needed.

Documentation of remediation is scanned into the student’s file.

Preclinical and Clinical Summative Assessment

Threshold for Remediation

If the minimum passing score is not achieved on a summative assessment

EOD Program written exam <80% requires remediation

PAEA EOC exam <80% requires remediation

Summative OSCE <80% requires remediation

Remediation Process

Requires meeting with course director, faculty advisor and Director of Student Success

Remediation activity is developed by the Director of Student Success

If the student does not successfully complete the remediation task, they will be referred to the Academic Performance and Advancement Committee (APAC). APAC will:

Review all relevant materials

Meet with the student

Develop a proposed action plan, including required steps and a timeline for completion, for approval by the Program Director

Notify the Program Director upon the student’s successful completion of the action plan

Ensure the student has satisfactorily completed and exited the action plan by graduation

Remediation does not result in a grade change

Outcomes and Risks

Upon successful remediation, a course grade of “U” will be replaced with a “C” to allow continuation in the program.

Failure to complete remediation or to achieve a “C” on a remediated assessment places the student at risk of dismissal.

A second course grade of “U” after successful remediation subjects the student to consideration for dismissal.

Documentation

Successful completion is determined at the discretion of the Director of Student Success or APAC if needed.

Documentation of remediation is scanned into the student’s file.

Consideration

A student is subject to dismissal with a course performance that includes any of the following:

Two course grades of “U”

Two cumulative GPA checkpoints below 3.00

Three EOR exam scores below 70% or three SCPE grades below 79.5%

Inability to pass a Summative Exam
