Retesting

This policy provides a limited and optional, retesting option—not remediation—to ensure students demonstrate essential knowledge and skills in alignment with program standards. Students who elect to retest must achieve a minimum score of 70% to demonstrate competency. Successful retests may earn up to 10 additional points, but the maximum recorded grade is capped at 70%. Skills assessments will follow the uniform standards outlined in the Skills Policy.

I. Written Assessment: Didactic multiple-choice exams

  1. Eligibility

  1. One retest is permitted per semester.

  2. Retesting is optional and initiated at the request of the student.

  3. If score is <70% on an exam

 

2.Process

  1. The student must notify the course director in writing of their request to retest within 48 hours of grades being released.

  2. The retest will be scheduled at the discretion of faculty in alignment with the Retesting Rubric.

  3. The retest must be completed no later than 14 days after the first exam was administered. 

 

3.Grading

  1. Students must achieve a minimum score of 70% to demonstrate competency.

  2. Upon successful retest, up to 10 additional points may be earned, with the maximum recorded grade capped at 70%.

  3. If competency is not achieved (score <70%), the original grade stands.

IIFormative OSCEs and Skills Assessments 

  1. Eligibility

  1. Students may retest one failed formative OSCE or skills assessment per semester.

  2. Retesting is optional and must align with the program’s Skills Policy.

  3. If scored <70% on OSCE or skills assessment.

 

2.Process

  1. Students must request a retest in writing to the course director within 48 hours of OSCE or skills assessment grade release.

  2. Retesting will be conducted in accordance with the uniform standards outlined in the Skills Policy and the Retesting Rubric.

  3. Retesting should be completed within 14 days of initial assessment.

 

3.Grading

  1. Competency is defined as a minimum passing score of 70%.

  2. Upon successful retest, up to 10 additional points may be added, with the maximum recorded grade capped at 70%.

  3. If competency is not demonstrated, the original grade remains.

 

III. PAEA End of Rotation Exams (EORs)

1. Eligibility

  a. Two Retest permitted per year

  b. Retesting is optional

c. If student receives equivalent of <70% on EOR

2. Process

  a. The student must submit a written request for a retest to the course director and director of student success within 48 hours of grade release.

  b. The retest will be a PAEA provided EOR given no sooner than 21 days following initial EOR per PAEA guidelines. 

3. Grading

  a. Student must achieve a minimum passing score to achieve competency

b. Failure to achieve competency will result in progression decisions according to the programs Academic Progression Policy

c. Highest score will be recorded. 

4. Consideration

  a. A student is subject to dismissal with a course performance that includes any of the following: 

  i. Two course grades of "U"

  ii. Two cumulative GPA checkpoints below 3.00

  iii. Three EOR exam scores below 70% or three SCPE course grades below 79.5%

  iv. Inability to pass a Summative Exam

IV.Summative AssessmentPre-clinical and Clinical (End of Didactic exam, written exam, PAEA End of Curriculum exam, Summative OSCE)

  1. Eligibility

  1. One retest opportunity is permitted per summative exam.

  2. If student receives <70% on summative assessment

2.Process

  1. The student must submit a written request for a retest to the director of student success within 48 hours of grade release. 

  2. The retest  of:

    i. EOD written exam and Summative OSCE will follow the uniform standards of the Retesting Rubric and must be completed within the timeline established by program faculty.

     ii. PAEA EOC exam will utilize the PAEA provided retest and cannot be taken within 42 days of original test per PAEA guidelines

3.Grading

  1. Students must achieve a minimum passing score to demonstrate competency.

  • Failure to achieve competency will result in progression decisions according to the program’s Academic Progression Policy.
