Violations of Academic or Professional Standards
Academic Warning
The following are examples of conditions that will result in a student being placed on Academic Warning by the APPC:
- Any module GPA <3.0, or cumulative GPA <3.0 between academic checkpoints
- Any course grade of C
- A student who scores <70% on an EOR exam for the first time in the Clinical Year
- A failed Summative Exam clinical skills component (OSCE, stations, etc.)
Academic Probation
The following are examples of conditions that will result in a student being placed on Academic Probation by the APPC:
- A student who earns a grade of “U” for any course in the program
- A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.00 at any Academic Checkpoint
- A student who receives a second course grade of C during the clinical year
- A student who scores < 70% on a second EOR exam
- A failed remediation of a Summative OSCE
- A failed End of Curriculum Exam
Professionalism Warning
The following are examples of conditions that will result in a student being placed on Professionalism Warning by the APPC:
- Failure to demonstrate or comply with the behaviors expected of a PA student as listed on the Academic and Professional Progress page.
- Trending inability to follow program procedures related to attendance, completion of compliance documentation, etc.
Professionalism Probation
The following are examples of conditions that will result in a student being placed on Professionalism Probation by the APPC:
- Repeating the concerns addressed in “warning"
- Using macroaggressions, hate speech, etc.
*Note: Some professional policy violations may be so egregious that warning and/or probation will be skipped in lieu of program dismissal. Examples may include:
- Conviction of a crime that will preclude the student from participating in clinical education
- Falsifying admissions documents
- Blatant HIPAA violations
- Attending to patient care while impaired/under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Dismissal from a clinical practicum experience by a preceptor or health care system
A student placed on Academic or Professionalism Probation will receive a letter from the Chair of the APPC outlining the reason for the probation, its conditions, and the steps necessary for the student to return to Good Academic Standing. In addition, the student on probation is required to meet with their faculty advisor and, in the case of Academic Probation, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to discuss the situation and develop a strategy for improving performance. While on probation, students will not be permitted to hold an office in the student society or serve as the leader of any PA program function or activity. When the student has met the conditions to return to Good Academic Standing as outlined in their letter, they may be permitted to resume leadership roles with the approval of their advisor.
If the student is unable to raise their cumulative GPA to greater than or equal to 3.00 by the next Academic Checkpoint, that student will be subject to dismissal. In the execution of the minimum GPA policy, there is no formal or written Warning alert given prior to the Probation determination.
Any student who remains on Academic or Professional Probation at the time of graduation and has not committed any additional infractions related to the Probation, will be released from probationary status in a meeting of the APPC held prior to graduation. The student need not be present at this meeting.
Any event that results in the sanction of either Academic or Professional Probation for a student who is either currently, or has previously been, on Academic or Professional Probation at any time during the PA program, puts that student in jeopardy of dismissal.
