Overview of Sanctions of the APPC

Concern, Warning, and Probation are sanctions imposed by the Academic and Professional Progress Committee (APPC). The intention of the sanction is to notify a student formally of their status/progress in the program.  There are professional and academic sanctions. Probationary status is reportable to medical boards and future employers; concern and warning are not reportable. A student with a “warning” is still considered “in good standing,” while a student on “probation” is not.

Definitions

  • Concern: Students reviewed by APPC who do not reach the criteria for Academic Warning or Professional Warning. For example, a student has received < 70% on more than 2 graded assessments in a course but finishes the course with a B (concern of knowledge deficit).
  • Academic Warning: students whose academic performance traces a trajectory that points toward reaching criteria for academic probation at the next academic checkpoint. Students on academic warning must meet with their advisor regularly and attend Longitudinal Study Groups. It is strongly recommended that these students schedule a consultation with university support services (such as disability resources, counseling, health services, etc.). Additional plans may vary based on learner needs.
  • Academic Probation: students who are at risk of program dismissal due to inability to meet program outcomes or technical standards.Students on probation are NOT in good academic standing. Individualized plans to return to good standing will be addressed with the student. These plans may include required meetings with university support services.
  • Professional Warning: Students who have begun to demonstrate behaviors that violate professional standards and/or policies. The student is at risk of professional probation with continued behavior. Students on professional warning must follow the guidance provided by the APPC regarding progression criteria.
  • Professional Probation: Students who demonstrate repeated or significant behavior concerns, who are at risk of program dismissal due to inability to meet program outcomes, Technical Standards, and/or professional conduct expectations. Students on probation must follow the guidance provided by the APPC regarding progression criteria.
