GBL 233 TURKEY & DUBAI: EUROMED: MELTING POT OR FRYING PAN
The Mediterranean region intersects Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East with one country at the crossroads, Turkey. This land has been the conduit for the trade of goods, ideas, and culture for thousands of years with a strong heritage that merges Greek and Roman antiquities with Arabic influences. Turkey has a dynamic economy, rich history, and sophisticated culture fusion of societies east and west, past and present. Modern Turkey, driven by economic growth, has emerged as political power in the region attempting to project a stabilizing influence along the ancient Silk Road and beyond. In this course, students will be exposed to the modern-day complexities rooted in the ancient historical past of this region. The main mechanism for this understanding is through a comparative analysis of Turkey and another country that lies in the Euro med region extending all the way to the Middle East, bound in the common destiny of the shifting regional dynamics and the growing desire to engage in global competitiveness. The itinerary will be an engaging combination of guided historical sights and museums, university visits, and business visits with entrepreneurs to cottage industry to large multinational firms.
